What's the difference between timber, engineered, and SPC flooring?

Timber flooring is solid hardwood throughout – the most premium option with 100+ year lifespan and can be refinished multiple times. Engineered flooring has a real timber veneer over a stable plywood core – more versatile for installation over concrete and underfloor heating. SPC flooring is a waterproof rigid core with a printed design layer – ideal for wet areas and DIY installation.

Which flooring is best for underfloor heating?

Engineered and SPC flooring are both suitable for underfloor heating. Their construction allows them to handle temperature fluctuations without warping. Solid timber is generally not recommended for underfloor heating due to expansion and contraction issues.

Is SPC flooring really waterproof?

SPC is waterproof in terms of the material the plank is made of which means the boards will not swell, warp or rot from water exposure as the rigid core is made of stone-plastic composite that will not absorb moisture.

SPC flooring is extremely water resistant meaning small amounts of water sitting on top of the board will not damage the boards and every day spills, wet shoes and occasional water exposure is absolutely fine.

However SPC Flooring is not able to act as a waterproof barrier for your subfloor or home structure.

It is important to note if a floor is completely flooded water can still get under the board through the seams and edges of the floor and  under skirtings which and if this occurs water may soak into the substrate or surrounding materials. Meaning a major water leak or flood situation would impact the SPC Flooring.

Which Hardwood Flooring species is best for high-traffic areas?

Blackbutt (Eucalyptus Pilularis) hardwood flooring offers exceptional hardness and durability, making it ideal for high-traffic zones. With a Janka rating around 2,000, it surpasses many imported hardwoods in wear resistance.

Ordering & Samples

Do you offer free samples?

Yes! We provide free samples of our flooring ranges. Simply fill out the sample request form or call us. Samples are typically delivered within 3-5 business days within New Zealand.

We deliver throughout New Zealand. Delivery costs vary based on location and order size. Contact us for a delivery quote specific to your location.

How much flooring do I need to order?

Installation

Can I install flooring myself?

SPC flooring with click-lock systems is DIY-friendly for capable homeowners. However, solid timber and engineered flooring generally require professional installation for warranty coverage and best results. We can recommend installers in your area.

How long should flooring acclimatise before installation?

Solid Timber Flooring ideally should climatise for 3-4 weeks at a minimum before laying down.

Engineered flooring should acclimatise for 48-72 hours in the installation area. Keep the room at normal living conditions (18-24°C, 35-65% humidity).

SPC flooring requires minimal acclimatisation – usually 24 hours is sufficient.

Can flooring be installed over existing floors?

SPC and floating engineered floors can often be installed over existing hard floors (tiles, vinyl) if they’re level and in good condition. Solid timber typically requires removal of existing flooring. Always check with us first for your specific situation.

How does installation work for SPC Flooring?

Hansen’s SPC Flooring features the patented Uniclic® drop and lock system which is fast, simple and does not require nails or glue.

We have installation guides available for clients to refer to (perfect for any DIY’er) and/or we have a number of recommended floor installers as a reference guide.

Looking after your Flooring

Can timber floors be refinished?

Yes! Solid timber can be sanded and refinished multiple times throughout its lifetime. Engineered flooring with a thick veneer (3mm+) can typically be refinished 1-2 times. SPC flooring cannot be refinished but its durable wear layer is designed to last 20+ years.

How do i maintain my SPC Flooring?

SPC Flooring is a very low maintenance and worry-free. Simple sweeping or light vaccum along with occasional damp mopping is all it takes to keep your floors looking fresh and beautiful.

How do i maintain my Hardwood or Engineered Flooring?

Hardwood and Engineered Flooring requires low maintenance sweeping or a light vaccum. We recommend a cleaning solution like Bona (found at your local hardware store) for the occasional mop over the floor which helps protect the natural timber and oil finish.
